Your file stays on your device

Most online converters upload your file to a server, work on it there and send a result back. tab3d does the work in your browser instead, with the same kind of code a desktop program would use. The file is read from your disk into the page's memory and never travels anywhere.

That is why there is no size limit set by a server, no waiting in a queue and no account. It is also why a design you have not released yet is safe to open here. How your files stay private explains the details and shows how to check them yourself.

If your file won't open

Some formats belong to one company and can only be read by its software. For those, this is the shortest route:

  • DWG. Convert it to DXF with the free ODA File Converter, then open the DXF in the DXF viewer. To only look at it, Autodesk Viewer opens DWG online for free.
  • SolidWorks (SLDPRT, SLDASM, SLDDRW). Ask the sender to export a STEP file, which opens in the STEP viewer, or open the file in eDrawings Viewer, which is free from Dassault Systèmes.
  • Revit, Inventor, Fusion, SketchUp and Blender files. Export STEP, STL or OBJ from the program that made the file. Those open here.
  • Files that used to open in Microsoft 3D Viewer. The app was removed from the Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026. STL, OBJ, GLB, PLY and 3MF files open on this page instead.

Questions

Is tab3d free?

Yes. Every tool is free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you open or convert.

What happens to my file?

Your browser reads it and does the work on your own device. The file is never sent to a server, because the site has nowhere to send it: there is no upload endpoint at all. The page on how your files stay private shows how to confirm this in your browser's developer tools.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers, phones and tablets. The STL to STEP converter needs a browser from 2024 or later; if yours is older, the page says so and every other tool still works.

How large a file can I open?

There is no fixed limit. The file is held in your device's memory, so the limit is the device. A laptop opens files of a few hundred megabytes. A phone has less memory, so a very large file may need a computer.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing is installed and nothing is downloaded except the page itself. The heavier parts, such as the CAD kernel that reads STEP files, load only when you open a file that needs them.
